Like everyone else, we writers benefit from good self-care. Here are some suggestions.
5-10 minutes or less
- drink a glass of water
- take three easy breaths into your belly
- write one sentence on your manuscript
- journal about things you’re grateful for
- ask for help with something on your to-do list
- do a few jumping jacks or gentle stretches
- eat a piece of fruit
- make a medical appointment you’ve been putting off
- close your eyes, visualize the world as a better place for everyone
- snuggle your pet (plushies count!)
- watch a video of a baby laughing uncontrollably
- listen to a favorite song
15-30 minutes
- write a paragraph or two in your manuscript
- dance to your favorite music (like nobody's watching)
- meditate
- make a quick, nutritious meal
- take an Epsom salt bath
- tidy your desk
1 hour +
- do a sauna or float
- take a long walk in nature
- take a mini-vacation from screen time
- go to bed early and/or sleep late
- write an opinion piece for your local newspaper
Community Care
- spend distraction-free time with family or friends
- write or call your lawmaker about an issue you care about
- attend a community meeting or protest
- volunteer!
- attend a community event
- donate to a cause you care about
- join or start a writing group
- share a meal with a neighbor
When you do a self-care or community-care activity, do it mindfully, reminding yourself of why you’re doing it and the benefit you and your community will get from it.
